During our Marguerite Bay Reunion in Lockerbie, Scotland, we did manage to corner FIDS veteran and Antarctic dog man Ben Hodges. He offered the following helpful hints, first passed along in his 1963 Stonington Island Base dog report. - Ed.

Tip for the Trail…

Bitches in Season

by Ben Hodges

If you have a bitch in season, particularly a leader, what you must do when out in the field is to picket her directly outside the tent entrance. This is to prevent any amorous escapee males from reaching her before you can intervene to prevent an unwanted breeding.

When your bitch leader is in heat, put some more weight in the sled [to help slow down the team dogs in hot pursuit]. But if she stops to pee, be prepared for trouble!
